If you’re savvy enough to be reading blogs and eZines about eMarketing, you probably are aware of the challenges associated with getting visitors to your website. So many of the small business owners I speak with on a daily basis have worked diligently to create engaging and easily navigated websites for their businesses, but they don’t know how to take their online presence to the next level.
A website is only as good as the number of people who see it. It doesn’t matter if you spend five grand on a website designer, utilizing all the latest flash technology with exciting graphics and all the bells and whistles you can think of. Try this. Put yourself in the mind of one of your potential customers. What words would they use when they are conducting a search for your products or services? Come up with a list of four or five one, two, and three word phrases that customers might enter into a search engine, which, when entered, would hopefully bring up your website. Take them one at a time and enter them into your favorite search engine. You should use one of the major search engines (Google, Yahoo, MSN) because your clients most likely are. (If you don’t know how people are finding your website, then you are in serious need of a Visitor Tracking System!)
How far down the list does your website come up? Is it in the top ten? Top twenty? Thirty? Lower than thirty? Chances are, if your site isn’t in the top thirty, you’re not being seen by the majority of your potential customers! Ideally, you want to be on that first page, the top ten listings on any search engine. Work your way through each of your keyword phrases- the words customers would use to find you through a search engine- and keep notes on how your website ranks. Are you happy with the results?
You see, what so many business owners don’t realize, is that the majority of your business you’ll generate online will come from people who have never heard of your business. And the way these people will find your business will be through the search engines. If your website isn’t ranking towards the top of the search engine rankings, you’re missing out on a large portion of potential customers out there!
